The Akwa Ibom State Command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested 33 street light vandals during a raid of their hideout in Uyo.
Briefing newsmen in his office, the state Commander of the agency, Pedro Ideba, said that three of the suspects, who are already in custody, were caught along the newly commissioned Goodluck Jonathan Boulevard in the process of dismantling batteries that power the solar street lights at about 2am.
He explained that the arrest led to the dawn raid of the suspect’s hideout at Plaza area of Uyo, the state capital, where other members of the gang were rounded up.
Investigations, according to the NSCDC boss, revealed that the hoodlums arrested at Plaza area, were responsible for several criminal activities including robbery, theft, rape, and snatching of bags from passers-by.
The arrest of the suspects, he stated, led operatives of NSCDC to Mechanic village in Uyo, where some motor spare parts dealers, who bought the solar street light batteries from them were also arrested.
